Trydimensional

Jan 2014 Projection|Installation art

The “Trydimensional”:
I meant to wrong it as a hint of “to try” to think tridimensionally.

We're living in a 3D world, everything exists in a 3D space. Meanwhile, we often need to switch flexibly between 2D and 3D under different circumstances, using 3D logic to deal with things in the 2D world. We have rich experience in the 3D world, that's why we're not greatly troubled by the lack of depth information in 2D images. Rather, 2D images can bring convenience to our lives in the 3D world. Most of us tend to take for granted, but to me, it's a very interesting phenomenon.

For example, a 2D user's book can provide us with correct guidance in setup and usage of a 3D product. Take the overview of a spiral stairs for instance, we know clearly that we cannot get to the last step immediately from the first step, because there's a space difference between them. Also, we might drive on an overpass bridge under the guidance of a flat map, but it turned out that some of the roads are not on the same level. We can get to the other road only at the joint of the two roads, etc. These are the daily examples for the lack of depth information.

In this work, I used this kind of analogical method to unfolded the Rubik’s cube which we all are familiar with into a flat map, to reproduce the interesting dimensionality-switching experience. In the hope of provoking everyone’s further thoughts about the switch logic between 2D and 3D through interacting.
